Capital Regional District workers reach tentative agreement

VICTORIA – CUPE Local 1978, Capital Regional District (CRD) workers, and the CRD have reached a tentative agreement.

The agreement was reached last Thursday (November 10), after two days of mediation with a neutral third-party mediator appointed by the Labour Relations Board.

“Our members, like all CRD residents, have felt the pressure of rising interest rates and record high inflation and that has certainly added a layer of complexity to this round of negotiations,” says CUPE Local 1978 President Tom Benjamin. “We believe this new agreement will help ease some of the pressure our members are feeling and will ensure that we are able to continue to deliver quality services to residents, businesses, and visitors.”

CUPE Local 1978 members had been without a contract since December 31, 2021.

No further details of the agreement will be released until both parties have held successful ratification meetings.

CUPE Local 1978 represents approximately 1,400 members in the Greater Victoria region, including 1,000 members who work for the CRD and provide important community services for residents and businesses.
