CUPE BC donates $10,000 to UNITE Here! Local 40 strike fund

December 19, 2023

RICHMOND—CUPE BC brought holiday solidarity greetings to a picket line today, with General Vice-President Dal Benning presenting a cheque for $10,000 to Unite Here! Local 40 Vice-President Gurzar Grewal while greeting striking Local 40 members at the Sheraton Hotel.

Benning, also president of CUPE 718 (Richmond municipal inside workers), visited the Sheraton picket line with Vice-President Raman Johal. The Local 40 Sheraton workers have been on strike for six months, while members at the Radisson Blue (formerly Pacific Gateway) have been out for more than two years.

“It’s ridiculous that you’ve had to be out here for so long, and it is well past time for this employer to return to the table and truly negotiate a fair and decent contract,” Benning told the striking workers.

“But for as long as you remain out here, CUPE BC and our more than 100,000 members across the province, including here in Richmond, will stand in solidarity with you.”
