BURNABY— This fire season has devasted families and communities across our province, and we are proud to offer support to those affected by wildfires across the province. CUPE BC has donated $25,000 to both the BC SPCA and Canadian Red Cross’s BC and Yukon operations for a total of $50,000 in relief funds.
“This summer’s wildfires season has been shocking and destructive, and we know the crisis is far from over for many across our province,” said Trevor Davies, CUPE BC’s Secretary-Treasurer.
Among CUPE’s membership are thousands of community workers in hard-hit areas like the Okanagan, Shuswap, Fraser Canyon, Kootenays and Northern Interior, many forced from their homes while also working to maintain the public services communities rely on.
“It is inspiring to see the way British Columbians have pulled together this summer, and I’m so proud of CUPE members’ contributions to this effort,” said Davies. “To all those workers, in all parts of BC, who are serving their communities while also dealing with their own displacement and loss: thank you for your service.”
CUPE members work for municipalities, regional districts, emergency services, community social services, and many other sectors called into action by this summer’s wildfire emergencies.
CUPE BC’s donation to the Red Cross and BC SPCA is in recognition that rural wildfires affect both people, and their animals and livestock.
“We hope our contribution will help rebuild the lives and livelihoods of those affected,” said Davies, adding that the division of funds is designed to help those who have lost their farms and ranches, in addition to homes.
