Squamish municipal workers set to begin rotating job action

Squamish municipal workers set to begin rotating job action

SQUAMISH — CUPE Local 2269 members have issued 72-hour strike notice and rotating job action will begin this coming Thursday, October 2, 2025.

“District workers provide the critical public services our community counts on,” says CUPE 2269 President Celeste Bickford. “But the cost of everyday basics has continued to rise, and workers need wages that keep pace with the real cost of everyday life.”

Bickford adds that another key issue is recruitment and retention, and notes that competitive pay is essential to ensuring residents, businesses, and visitors can rely on high-quality services.

“Our members have clearly rejected the District’s last offer and the strong strike mandate reflects workers’ concerns about the lack of progress at the bargaining table, and the District’s unwillingness to put forward a contract that meets their workers’ needs,” says Bickford.

A strike vote took place over two days in July 2025 after negotiations broke down. Members voted 100 per cent in favour of job action.

District workers will be in a legal strike position as of 10:30 a.m. on October 2, 2025. Specific details about which services and locations will be impacted will be announced the morning job action begins.

CUPE 2269 members represent approximately 250 workers who provide integral community services to residents, businesses, and visitors in Squamish including water and wastewater treatment, swimming lessons, children’s programs and camps, recreation services, facilities maintenance, parks and trails maintenance, bylaw and animal control, snow removal, emergency program administration, and administrative, and operations support for the RCMP.
