BURNABY โ CUPE BC Secretary-Treasurer Trevor Davies welcomed more than 100 new and returning delegates to the 2023 Convention Orientation. Held online a week before the Convention opens, the orientation is organized in advance of each annual gathering to ensure that new delegates feel ready to participate fully in the convention business.
โWe want everyone to have the knowledge and confidence to make the most of their convention experience, both for themselves as delegates and as representatives of their membership,โ said Davies.
The Orientation was opened by President Karen Ranalletta who provided a heartfelt welcome, and thanked delegates in advance for their participation and commitment. She said that each yearโs new delegates represented new activists, whose engagement increased the capacity of the Union to work and win for members.
โThe large and active participation in this yearโs delegate orientation is a sign our Union is strong, and that we will have a dynamic and engaged convention,โ said Davies.
Ninety-nine resolutions were served to the 2023 Convention by CUPE BC committees, district councils and locals. Though resolutions range in topic, a number address public transportation, affordable housing, privatization, safety and human rights and other issues affecting workers and their communities.
โConvention is the democratic foundation of our Union. It updates our Constitution, adopts our budget, and enables our activists to gather together, and gain strength through the sharing of stories and experiences,โ said Davies. โConvention also sets our direction, providing a strategic plan for the coming year directly from members, through the resolutions they submit, prioritize, and adopt.โ
