VANCOUVER-Community members including CUPE activists were treated to a unique perspective on the struggles of sexual minorities at this morning’s International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia breakfast.
Danny Ramadan, a Vancouver-based writer and journalist, is a Syrian refugee who fled the war-torn country with his partner and came to Canada two years ago. At the breakfast, he spoke about the struggles faced by sexual minorities in the Arab world, the challenges facing queer political refugees, and what he and his partner have learned since arriving in North America.
The annual breakfast, which marks the international day against homophobia and transphobia (May 17), was sponsored by QMUNITY, a resource centre for the LGBTTI community in Vancouver. Ramadan will soon begin a new job at QMUNITY, becoming a member of CUPE 3495-3 in the process.
