Pension Committee

Fighting for everyone’s right to retire

This committee promotes and supports pension literacy and education, and develops strategies to advocate for an expansion of defined benefit pensions. The Committee supports CUPE BC’s advocacy for the introduction of pension benefits where none currently exist.

The Committee also helps coordinate worker representation on pension advisory committees and joint trustee structures, and encourages member participation in other related pension bodies.

Increasing members’ pension knowledge

Committee work continues to focus on highlighting the value of pensions, defending and improving existing plans, and expanding defined benefit pensions to all. The past term included outreach with members on changes to the Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) and the group benefits attached to that plan—most CUPE members in B.C. are part of the MPP.

Other committee work included data collection on changes to other pension plans affecting CUPE members, encouragement of locals to expand pension benefits to precarious workers, development of updates to the Pension and Retirement Fact Sheet for members, and consideration of how pension investments can advance reconciliation.
