GRAND FORKS – CUPE has reached an agreement with the City of Grand Forks, protecting jobs and avoiding staff layoffs initially announced in September.
CUPE local 4728 President Sukie Lawrence said that the agreement is based on a proposal developed by the union identifying measures that help address the employer’s financial shortfall, while at the same time treating workers with dignity.
The union received much community support and on December 14, released an open letter to the Mayor and Council outlining the situation, including assurances from the city that it would take measures to avoid layoff of active employees.
“We are pleased that in the end, after three difficult months, that the City agreed to place a priority on protecting its workers while addressing its financial problems,” said Lawrence.
The union looks forward to a fresh start in its relationship with its employer following the agreement.Â
