World’s best municipal tap water is right here in B.C.

GREENWOOD—The smallest city in Canada has been awarded the honour of “world’s best municipal tap water.”

Greenwood, B.C. took home the title of world’s best municipal tap water at the 22nd annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting in West Virginia. The competition received entries from a dozen states, Canada and South Korea.

“We are so proud of what our city has been able to accomplish,” said CUPE 2254 member Randy Smith. “We have great public services in Greenwood and we have really been focusing on water and wastewater. We are extremely proud of the tap water we provide.”

Smith says that the past week has been a whirlwind with so much media attention and interest in the city’s water, and he also notes that the local is looking forward to continuing to work with the City to keep supplying the world’s best municipal tap water.

“On behalf of CUPE BC I would like to congratulate everyone in Greenwood and I would also like to thank the CUPE members for all their hard work and dedication, which has clearly paid off,” said CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill. “I also want to acknowledge and thank the community for keeping water in public hands–where it belongs.”

Four members of CUPE 2254 work to maintain and improve Greenwood’s parks, roads, water and wastewater treatment plant.

Greenwood is about two hours east of Kelowna and has fewer than 700 residents.
