VIDC Sock Drive nets more than $1,000

VIDC Sock Drive nets more than $1,000

VICTORIA—Thanks to a combined effort by the Vancouver Island District Council and CUPE 374, more than $1,000 in socks and cash was raised over the holidays to benefit youth in need on Southern Vancouver Island.

Sponsored by the VIDC Women’s Committee, this was the third annual sock drive for Island Locals. Proceeds are donated to Sanctuary Youth Centre in Victoria, an initiative of several businesses, individuals and churches to benefit youth in need.  The Centre, which provides a safe meeting place and a community for young people who are isolated from mainstream society, also serves as a catalyst linking disadvantaged youth with local aid and services.

At each district council meeting throughout the year, the Vancouver Island Women’s Committee encourages its members to donate to an identified charitable community organization that provides service to people in need from North, South or Mid Island. Throughout the year, affiliate Locals generously support these initiatives.

“This is Vancouver Island’s way of reaching out and supporting strong local communities,” said CUPE 374 executive vice president Sarah Fairbrass, a member of the Women’s Committee.

“It’s a great feeling, knowing that our district council could provide some much needed necessities to disadvantaged youth in the community at this time of year.”
