The White Elephant in Wine Country

The White Elephant in Wine Country

PENTICTON— CUPE National anti-privatization coordinator Robin Roff is releasing her 2010 Privatization Report, “A White Elephant in Wine Country” on Sunday, November 28 at the Ramada Penticton Hotel at 1PM.

The report focuses on Penticton’s experience with public-private partnerships with the South Okanagan Events Centre and the high cost to residents.

“In the case of the South Okanagan Events Centre, operational deficits, delays and cost overruns have forced Penticton to reduce services in other vital areas, like policing and community recreation,” says Roff.

Penticton’s experience is not unique. A mounting body of evidence indicates that public-private partnerships do not deliver the cost savings and service improvements they promise.

Roff will be joined at the press conference by University of Manitoba professor John Loxley who is in Penticton promoting his latest book, “Public Service, Private Profits”. Loxley will speak to the effects of privatization on communities across Canada.

Copies of the report will be available at the press conference.  View the report summary.
