NORTH VANCOUVER—CUPE Local 1936 (Community Social Services Workers—Greater Vancouver) is pleased to welcome 66 community-based service employees who work for the North Shore Disability Resource Centre Association.
In voting for CUPE representation, the new members join 102 current members of the Local’s Unit 14 who work in residential care for three group homes and eleven independent living programs on the North Shore.
The new members’ work covers a range of services to help adults, youth, and children with special needs to integrate into their communities in all aspects of life. These include recreation support, employment skills or supported employment, and basic life skills such as public transit training and helping with groceries.
The ratification vote to join CUPE was held on June 23.
“We’re very happy to bring more of these workers under our collective agreement to help them achieve things like better pay, better benefits, and the pension plan,” said CUPE 1936 President Michael Lanier.
“We will work together with them to achieve these gains as soon as possible.”
Lanier said the Local is excited to bring these new members under the same employer as their fellow CUPE members who work in residential care.
