CUPE 389 welcomes North Shore museum workers

CUPE 389 welcomes North Shore museum workers

NORTH VANCOUVER—CUPE 389, representing public workers in the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, is proud to welcome eight new members from the North Vancouver Museum and Archives (NVMA). The workers document the history of the development of North Vancouver and maintain an archive of historical artifacts.

“Our newest members are charting the rich legacy of the North Shore,” said CUPE 389 President Cindy McQueen. “CUPE 389 is proud to extend a warm welcome to our newest members.”

McQueen notes that not only does their work benefit residents of the District and City of North Vancouver today, it will preserve history for future generations.

CUPE 389 is looking forward to meeting with this group to begin work to negotiate their first collective agreement.

The eight museum workers joined CUPE in a Labour Board vote held earlier this month.

The museum is jointly funded by the City of North Vancouver the District of North Vancouver, with support from the Government of British Columbia through the BC Arts Council. A new museum is under construction in the Lower Lonsdale area of North Vancouver. NVMA collects and preserves aspects of the material culture of North Vancouver and cares for approximately 20,000 historic artifacts of local and regional importance.

CUPE Local 389 is a composite local representing several bargaining units on the North Shore, including the workers at the North Vancouver School District #44, District of North Vancouver, City of North Vancouver, District and City Libraries, North Vancouver Recreation Commission, Northlands Golf Course, Northshore Neighbourhood House, the Village of Lions Bay, and the North Vancouver Museum and Archives.
