New agreement achieved for CUPE Local 4879 workers at Thompson Rivers University

New agreement achieved for CUPE Local 4879 workers at Thompson Rivers University

KAMLOOPS – The union representing close to 500 workers at Thompson Rivers University ratified a new collective agreement that includes a 5.4 per cent wage increase over a 5 year period, as well as health benefit improvements.

“It was hard bargaining,” said Lois Rugg, President of CUPE Local 4879.  “The union focused on increased health care benefits for vision wear and dental implants and addressed a number of important issues for our members.”

The agreement brings improvements to health and safety with provision of proper work footwear while also creating new positions for disabled workers unable to join the regular work force, expanding criteria for hiring students, and protecting tuition waiver benefits for all members.

“The bargaining committee worked hard to make sure no worker was forgotten and hammered out a fair deal,” said Rugg.

The deal covers a period of 5 years beginning April 1, 2014 ending March 31, 2019.
