Reopening of rec centres & pools welcomed across BC

Reopening of rec centres & pools welcomed across BC

Summer is here, and after months of the COVID-19 public health crisis, all British Columbians deserve some much-needed play and recreation. With the province cautiously moving forward, many are welcoming the reopening of public recreation centres and public pools.

โ€œWeโ€™ve seen a huge surge in users in just the first couple weeks. You can really tell people missed these services,โ€ says Darlene Worthylake, president of CUPE 458, representing recreation workers in the Fraser Valley. โ€œOur members are confident in the safety protocols put in place and are thrilled to be back offering programs and services.โ€

With the guidance of the BC governmentโ€™s Restart Plan, recreation and aquatic services provided by CUPE members have been reopening across the province, including:

  • The City of Burnaby has reopened most of its public pools and has started registration for many of its outdoor recreation programs.
  • The City of Quesnel has reopened its public pool, along with its recreation centre gym thatโ€™s been open since June.
  • Whistler has announced the municipal gym and ice rink will be reopened August 15, and has resumed many of its outdoor fitness programs.
  • The Ferny Coombe Outdoor Pool in Agassiz (District of Kent) has been open since the start of July, and the communityโ€™s recreation centre is offering fitness programs, with appointments available to use the centreโ€™s gym.
  • Coquitlam has reopened the Cityโ€™s nine spray pads and two outdoor pools. The City has also announced the reopening of two arenas and the City Centre Aquatic Centre by mid-August. And the City has started registration for August recreation programs.

โ€œOur members are eager to serve their community again,โ€ says Gord Willis, president of CUPE 386, representing recreation workers in Coquitlam. โ€œThey are going help make this a great summer after all.โ€

But despite these and many other communities that have started to safely reopen rec centres and pools โ€“ and the many private, for-profit fitness centres and gyms also reopening – many other local governments are stalling, leaving tens of thousands of British Columbians without access to affordable recreation.

โ€œIf some local governments can find a safe way to reopen rec centres and pools – and with so much private recreation open for business – why canโ€™t all communities resume these valued programs and services? It just doesnโ€™t make sense,โ€ says Paul Faoro, president of CUPE BC. โ€œFar too many seniors, low-income families, persons with disabilities, and other community members that donโ€™t have access to private, for-profit recreation are being left without any affordable and accessible recreation.โ€

CUPE BC launched a campaign effort to get more public parks, recreation centres and public pools opened for the summer. All British Columbians are encouraged to visit betterservicesbettercommunities.ca to send a message to their municipal governments that exercise and play shouldnโ€™t be limited to those who pay, and that everyone in BC deserves recreation this summer.
