Comox Valley CUPE locals deliver a catch

COURTENAY – The Comox Valley Food Bank received a healthy addition with the donation of more than 12 cases of canned wild salmon delivered by three Comox Valley CUPE locals this week. The donation was part of an Island-wide initiative by the Vancouver Island District Council in partnership with Protein for People, a community partnership to address protein shortages at B.C.’s food banks.

CUPE Local Presidents Karen Garrett (CUPE 556 – representing municipal workers throughout the Comox Valley), Denise Bullock (CUPE 439 – School District 71) and Michelle Waite (CUPE 3479 – North Island College support staff) toured the facility when they dropped off the donation.

Jeff Hampton, president of the Comox Valley Food Bank Society noted that the Food Bank was very appreciative of the donation. In fact, they began processing it immediately!

The operation manager told the CUPE presidents that the addition of this protein for food hampers will go a long way for local residents and families that need the food bank.  Over 1200 people a month from all areas of the Comox Valley access local food bank services. This will only continue to increase, especially in light of BC Liberal budgets that do not adequately address the needs of lower income families.
