CHILLIWACK—CUPE 458 kicked off their 60th Anniversary on Friday by serving lunch to members and exempt staff at four locations in the Fraser Valley. The Local’s actual anniversary date is January 22, 1951.
“As we look back, we can be proud of our contributions to our community as municipal workers,” says CUPE 458 president Louise Piper. “We not only provide excellent service, we also live, work and play here.” Piper noted that many CUPE members support local organizations, shop locally, and are active in their communities.
Food for the lunches was all provided locally. Sherry’s Carpathian Kitchen catered the lunch, Price Mart baked the fresh buns that were served, and Sardis Bakery made the beautiful and delicious cakes.
CUPE 458 is also planning additional anniversary events that will involve and support the community.
CUPE 458 member Darlene Ell who works in Finance at City Hall says, “It’s nice that something is happening. Our union is very aware of the community and it’s great to help make the community aware of our union as well.”
Members of the public visiting Chilliwack’s City Hall see a display that celebrates CUPE 458’s 60th anniversary. The display in the foyer features photos of members providing a variety of public services.
Managers, exempt staff, and City Councillors Pat Clark and Steward McLean joined members at the lunch at Chilliwack City Hall and Public Works. At the District of Kent in Agassiz, lunch was enjoyed by guests including Mayor Lorne Fisher and exempt staff, along with CUPE members. In Cultus Lake, Park Board employees served up a barbecue steak lunch to members and guests who included Board Commissioners John Cameron, Owen Skonberg, Terry Woodrow, Brian Nokleby, and Sacha Peter. At the Fraser Valley Regional District, CUPE members were joined by exempt staff and guests including Board Chair Patricia Ross.
Piper thanked members and guests, saying, “We thank you for the last 60 years, and look forward to the next 60.”
