Building strong communities with Vaisakhi

Building strong communities with Vaisakhi

BURNABY—As mid-April approaches, CUPE BC’s Workers of Colour working group is once again preparing to greet hundreds of thousands of Lower Mainland street festival goers with a friendly smile—and an apple.

Also known as Baisakhi, Vaisakhi is an historical and religious festival marking the Sikh and Hindu new year. Usually held on April 13 or 14, the Vaisakhi festival celebrates the spring harvest with colourful displays of traditional Indian dress, music, dance performances—and lots of delicious, free Indian food.

CUPE BC, which has been attending Lower Mainland Vaisakhi events since 2010, will have a tent at this year’s Vancouver festival

https://vancouversbestplaces.com/events-calendar/festivals-and-events/vaisakhi-parades/vancouver-vaisakhi-celebrations/ on Saturday, April 15.  CUPE BC is also supporting the Surrey event http://www.surrey.ca/culture-recreation/15046.aspx on Saturday, April 22, with the union’s presence led by Local 728.

Those interested in volunteering to hand out apples at the Vancouver event on April 15 are asked to show up any time from 8:30 a.m. onwards at the front entrance of the Sunset Community Centre, located at 6810 Main Street in Vancouver.

To volunteer for the Surrey event, e-mail CUPE 728 at office@cupe728.ca or call the Local office at 604-576-2873.
