RICHMOND— Women from throughout the Lower Mainland gathered in Richmond to attend CUPE Metro Vancouver District Council’s fourth annual International Women’s Day (IWD) lunch this past Friday, March 8.
“We sponsored our first lunch four years ago and it was such a success we have continued to do it every year since. Each year the lunch is in a different community and we invite women and community groups who might not otherwise have the opportunity to celebrate IWD,” says Cindy McQueen, Vice-president of CUPE Metro Council.
This year’s event was held in Richmond at the Britannia Shipyard National Historic site and featured entertainment from Janet Panic and the No Sh!t Shirleys.
Ruth Adams from the Tsawwassen First Nation welcomed everyone and sang a beautiful traditional song to open the event. Richmond city councillor Linda Barneswas also in attendance to wish Richmond residents and visitors a happy IWD and reminded attendees of the need to continue advocating for women.
More than 75 women were able to enjoy a delicious lunch and also received a take home package filled with food and personal items. There was also a highly popular craft table where women were able to make bracelets.
McQueen would like to extend a thank-you to all the CUPE sisters who volunteered their time to make this year’s event so successful.
