Rally for striking White Rock workers attracts big crowd, high energy

WHITE ROCK – Members of CUPE Local 402-01 walking the picket line in White Rock were joined yesterday by CUPE BC officers, CUPE members from around the Lower Mainland, members of other unions, and representatives of the BC Federation of Labour for a solidarity rally outside White Rock City Hall.

The rally was emceed by Local 402-01 President Mike Guraliuk, who spoke about the lack of respect the City has shown CUPE members during negotiations. CUPE BC President Mark Hancock urged members to keep up the fight for a fair and reasonable agreement, and told them they have the full support of all 630,000 CUPE members across the country. Jeannie Kilby, President of CUPE 402, called on White Rock mayor and council to get back to the bargaining table to negotiate. BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair told the workers that their struggle for a long term disability plan is worth fighting for and that all affiliates of the Fed will support them.
