CUPE 7000 members overwhelmingly reject Southern Railway’s final offer

BURNABY—CUPE members working for Southern Railway have rejected the employer’s final offer with a 91-percent “no” vote that took place at two locations today. Of the 126 members eligible to vote, 106 voted against the package.

“Today’s vote simply reinforces our members’ rejection of the employer’s unfair and unreasonable offer on November 22, when we voted 98 per cent in favour of job action,” said CUPE 7000 president Bill Magri.

“This is, and always has been, a concessionary package that does not address our concerns. We remain committed to achieving a fair and equitable agreement through negotiations at the bargaining table, and we await the employer’s next move in that regard.”

The two sides remain far apart on several issues, including contracting out, job security, overtime effects on health and safety, and post-retirement benefits.
