Job action continues as CUPE readies to celebrate 50 years at UVic

VICTORIA – Job action and picket lines will be up around UVic until Tuesday, Sept. 18, when CUPE locals 917, 951 and 4163 return to the bargaining table. The move by the university to get back for three days of talks comes after a week of escalating job actions by 917 and 951. Wrapping up the current job action is a major concert on campus Monday night. See details below:

Monday, Sept. 17 – Free Concert – Doors 7:30, Show from 8-10pm at Farquhar Auditorium, University of Victoria.

Tickets are free however it is reserved seating and you must obtain a ticket for each person attending from the University Centre Box Office or online at https://tickets.uvic.ca/

The Canadian Union of Public Employees is throwing a party for UVic’s 50th Birthday and everyone is invited to this free show featuring legendary blues musician Jim Byrnes and his band. Labour singer Anne Feeney will warm up the crowd in support of the more than 1,500 striking CUPE workers at UVic. 

CUPE BC President Barry O’Neill will bring greetings from the more than 85,000 CUPE members in BC.  At UVic the three CUPE Locals represent more than 3,000 workers who deliver support and teaching assistant services to students.

CUPE is also fundraising for the UVic Student Society Food Bank and, although the show is free, cash donations for the food bank will be gladly accepted at the door.
