Early Childhood Educators join CUPE

SURREY —More than one hundred Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) in Surrey have voted in favour of joining CUPE 402.

CUPE 402 president, Laurie Larsen, welcomed the new members at the local’s most recent general membership meeting.

“These workers realize the value and advantages of being represented by a union,” says Larsen. “They are now not only part of CUPE 402, but part of Canada’s largest union. CUPE not only provides members a great deal of support but also has extensive resources and offers many education opportunities.”

Larsen also notes that CUPE is becoming the union of choice for ECEs so it makes sense for CUPE 402 to represent these workers.

The new members work with preschool aged children at various centres throughout the city of Surrey and have considerable experience in the early child development field. They have joined the union to address concerns with wages, benefits, health and safety and job security.

CUPE 402 currently represents over 2,500 fulltime and part-time employees in the City of Surrey.
