NORTH VANCOUVER—Locked out North Shore Winter Club (NSWC) employees are gearing up for an evening of action as the NSWC prepares to host its Annual General Meeting tonight.
“Our message to board members, managers and club members is that it’s time to put an end to this senseless lockout which has gone on for almost five months now,” said CUPE National Representative John Strohmaier. “CUPE employees are eager to get back to work, however managers and board members don’t seem interested in ending this lockout.”
Strohmaier said the union is willing to work with the club to find agreement on the biggest outstanding issue, hours of work.
“CUPE 389 is ready, willing and able to resume negotiations. We’ve recently written to the club’s general manager and all the club’s board members to stress that we want to negotiate an agreement but we’ve heard nothing back,” said Strohmaier.
Sixteen CUPE 389 employees at the NSWC were locked out May 3 by the managers and board members at the NSWC. No negotiations have taken place since the lockout began and there are currently no bargaining dates set.
“We have just passed the 150th day of this lockout—that’s nearly half a year these 16 employees have been kept out of their jobs by managers who won’t negotiate,” said CUPE BC Secretary-Treasurer Paul Faoro. “Despite the rain, I know that CUPE members from across the Lower Mainland will be on hand tonight to send a strong message to North Shore Winter Club members: Your management team needs to get back to the negotiating table and reach a fair and reasonable deal with your long-serving and dedicated employees.”
The North Shore Winter Club is located at 1325 East Keith Road in North Vancouver.
