CUPE 798 to host “Christmas in July” fundraiser

POWELL RIVER—CUPE 798 and Quality Foods are teaming up to collect donations for Powell River’s local food bank. “Christmas in July” will take place on Saturday, July 21 in the Quality Foods Parking lot and all donations collected will be given to the Powell River Action Centre Food Bank.

“This event is especially important because food bank donations slow down significantly in the summer,” notes CUPE 798 president Danielle Craigen.

Craigen says the local donates regularly to the food bank and they were recently told that their donations are some of the few donations the food bank has been receiving. That sparked the local to organize this fundraiser.

CUPE 798 members will be accepting food and cash donations from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hotdogs and pop, provided by Quality Foods, will also be sold throughout the day. Proceeds from food sales and any cash donations received will be used to purchase items the food bank especially needs from Quality Foods at a discounted rate.

Santa Claus will also roam the aisles of Quality Foods to encourage shoppers in the store to pick up something extra to donate.

Anyone who donates will be entered in a raffle for a cooler that comes with a $50 Quality Foods gift certificate and three days of camping at Haywire Bay.

“CUPE 798 is very proud of the services we provide Powell River residents,” says Craigen. “We want to see Powell River grow and succeed – giving back to the community and helping those in need is just one way to support that goal.”

CUPE 798 represents municipal, library and regional district workers in Powell River. More than 150 workers deliver vital services including waste collection, bylaw enforcement, community and environmental services, planning, water and waste water operations, parks and recreation services, transit services and many other services.
