CUPE staff help Camosun students in need

VICTORIA- At the membership meeting of CUPE 2081 this week, the staff at Camosun College voted to donate canned goods, non perishable items, toiletries and money to the student society food banks. The $2000 donation from CUPE 2081 will go to food banks at the Lansdowne and Interurban campuses of Camosun.

CUPE was responding to a call for help from college students, whose food bank was unable to meet students’ needs.

“It’s unfortunate that the students we serve are finding it difficult to make ends meet and find themselves short on funds while educating themselves for a better future,” said CUPE 2081 president Jerry Oetting.

CUPE members at Camosun have taken a number of steps to support students in making it successfully through their chosen programs.

“We go beyond providing some relief for students who lack basic necessities while attending post secondary education. We also contribute to post- secondary bursaries and scholarships, as well as other ongoing commitments within the community as we believe the students who leave Camosun will become our future and build a stronger community,” said Oetting.
