O’Neill to address local economy at Comox event

COMOX—The president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, B.C. division, will provide the keynote address at Monday’s Professional Development Day event, to be held at Highland Senior Secondary School in Comox.

Each year, CUPE Local 439 organizes a themed event for Professional Development Day in the Comox Valley school district. This year’s theme for School District 71’s CUPE support staff workers is “Investing in Your Community.”

CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill’s keynote speech, entitled “Investing in Local Economies,” follows up on a 2008 provincial tour in which the union leader discussed the need for local investment policies that help build strong communities.

During his last visit to Comox, O’Neill spoke about the ways in which public-private partnerships and trade agreements can inhibit the ability of local governments to build local economies. On Monday, O’Neill will expand on some of the alternatives that can empower local governments and citizens alike.
