Ambulance Paramedic Convention Starts Monday

Ambulance Paramedic Convention Starts Monday

RICHMOND—More than 200 delegates from across B.C. are expected to attend the annual convention of the Ambulance Paramedics of BC, CUPE 873 that starts on Monday.

CUPE 873 president John Strohmaier will chair the proceedings. CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill will address the delegates on Monday afternoon.

Delegates will elect their executive officers and focus on how ambulance services are being provided in B.C., including the plan for paramedics during the Olympics.

“Despite asking the employer for two years about plans for the Olympics, we still don’t have answers,” says BJ Chute. “There aren’t enough ambulances to handle emergencies now. Where will we get additional paramedics and ambulances that we’ll need for the Games? These logistical issues need to be addressed.”

The convention is being held at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel (7551 Westminster Hwy, Richmond) from Monday, October 19 to Wednesday, October 21.

B.C.’s ambulance paramedics continue to provide services under Essential Services orders since the strike began on April 1. They are currently voting on the government’s last settlement offer.
