New membership numbers from CUPE National confirm CUPE BC as largest union in British Columbia

BURNABY – The latest CUPE membership numbers are out from CUPE National, showing continued growth in British Columbia, with nearly 97,000 CUPE members, confirming CUPE BC as the largest union in the province.

“There are a number of reasons for CUPE’s continued growth in British Columbia,” said CUPE BC President Paul Faoro. “The first is that our locals do such a great job representing our members, which makes workers want to join—and then get involved in union activism. We also have dedicated National staff in B.C., and they play a key role in making our union so strong.

“Another important factor in our growth is the fact that the BC NDP government in Victoria actually understands the importance of proper levels of funding for important public services like health care and education,” said Faoro. “Unlike the former BC Liberal government, Premier Horgan and his team are building and improving public services across the province. That’s good news for individuals and families who want to strengthen their communities, and CUPE members are proud to deliver those services.”

In addition to CUPE BC’s status as the largest union in British Columbia—public or private sector—the membership numbers also confirm that CUPE National remains the largest union in the country, with 680,000 members across Canada.
