White Rock civic workers give CUPE a strike mandate

WHITE ROCK – Workers in the City of White Rock have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action if they are unable to negotiate a fair settlement in their current round of bargaining.

CUPE 402-01 President Mike Guraliuk said that the vote was taken on Wednesday and the members of CUPE 402-01 voted 94 per cent in favour of strike action if necessary.

“We hope this sends a strong message to our employer that CUPE members are serious about reaching a fair deal,” said Guraliuk.

Bargaining started in June, 2013 and continued through to January 27, 2014 when the parties reached an impasse.  On January 30, the Labour Relations Board appointed a mediator and meetings are scheduled for March 10 and April 1, 2014.

The City of White Rock, which has relied on the services of Metro Vancouver during negotiations, has failed to address key issues for members that will improve the relationship between the parties.

“Especially given the very strong support of CUPE workers in White Rock, we are hopeful that the City comes to mediation prepared to reach a settlement,” said Guraliuk.

CUPE 402-01 represents members who work for the City of White Rock and provide a wide range of services to White Rock residents and businesses.
