DUNCAN- Members of CUPE 358 in the Cowichan Valley have a long tradition of supporting their communities and their sisters and brothers in need. On May 31, the Local continued that tradition, donating the proceeds of the 50/50 draw that accompanies the annual golf tournament to striking Naramata Centre workers.
Tournament participants CUPE 358 President Ron Salvati and CUPE BC Regional Vice-President for Vancouver Island Michelle Waite said that they were proud that 358 members raised $394, which the local will top up to $500.
Salvati said that CUPE 608, which represents the Naramata workers, is similar to his local. “We are a composite local that includes a range of local government units, as well as smaller private operations. We know how hard it is for a small unit to be forced to take job action and we wanted to reach out to our sisters and brothers at the United Church Naramata Centre.”
“The annual golf tournament and dinner is a great opportunity for members from many different communities and workplaces in the Cowichan Valley to get together in a relaxed and fun atmosphere for a good cause,” said Salvati. In past years, the local has donated proceeds of the 50/50 draw to KidSport Cowichan and the Cowichan Valley Basket Society food bank.
CUPE 358, which represents about 400 members throughout the Cowichan Valley, is very active in the community. From donating to organizations that support children and youth, to partnering with local radio station Sun FM to “Stuff A Truck” for Valley food banks CUPE 358 members give back to their communities.
This summer, the Local will once again be a premier sponsor of Islands Folk Festival, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
