White Rock city workers rally and strike at City Hall

WHITE ROCK–White Rock city workers and supporters rallied in front of City Hall to send a strong message to the Mayor and Council on the first-day of job action for CUPE 402-01.

CUPE 402-01 President Mike Guraliuk was joined by CUPE 402 President Jeannie Kilby and CUPE BC President Mark Hancock.

“You need to know that CUPE BC’s 85,000 members and the 627,000 members across the country are solidly behind you and will support you in your efforts to get a fair and respectful agreement,” said Hancock.

CUPE 402 President Jeannie Kilby, who represents close to 3,000 workers in the City of Surrey, also offered her Local’s support and acknowledged the hard work of the CUPE 402-01 bargaining committee.

Mike Guraliuk thanked representatives from other CUPE locals for coming out in support and especially thanked CUPE White Rock members for standing strong during a tough round of bargaining.

Guraliuk said that following today’s City Hall job action, the union plans to bring in an overtime ban starting Monday, May 5 for all CUPE members who work for the City.

Key issues for the union include the need for clear hours of work for all employees, fair treatment for casual and part-time employees, and protection for members who become seriously ill.

CUPE 402-01 represents members who work for the City of White Rock and provide a wide range of services to White Rock residents and businesses.
