Trustee vacancy for Municipal Pension Plan

Trustee vacancy for Municipal Pension Plan

Due to a resignation from the position, CUPE BC is accepting applications from CUPE members who may be interested in serving as a Trustee for the Municipal Pension Plan (MPP).

The MPP serves more than 280,000 active, inactive and retired members and their employers in British Columbia. Members and employers come from a variety of sectors across the province, including health, municipalities, school districts and others. Plan membership is broken down into about 178,000 active members, 71,000 retired members, and 32,000 inactive members. The Plan holds assets in excess of $31 billion. The Municipal Pension Plan is the sixth-largest defined benefit pension plan in Canada.

A Trustee’s main role is to establish and implement policies to guide how the plan is administered and how funds are invested. Trustees also deal with appeals from plan members and employers. As well, CUPE trustees work with the CUPE BC Pension Committee.

Members interested in this position must be able to spend upwards of 30 days per year at meetings, plus preparation and travel time. Trustees are also expected to participate in additional educational activities.

Interested members should possess some prior skills, knowledge and experience in order to effectively participate. These include an ability to work with others and provide leadership, to solve problems and exercise sound judgment, and to communicate effectively. Trustees must be able to respect confidentiality and maintain a high standard of personal values and ethics. And, given the level at which the MPP Board of Trustees functions, new trustees must have prior experience working on a board or committee and some prior exposure to pension issues.

Applications from members will be accepted at the CUPE BC Division until 4:00pm October 25, 2013. Members should include a complete resume and cover letter.

In early November the applications received will be reviewed by the selection committee. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in mid-November with a final recommendation being made by the CUPE BC Executive Board in December.

If you require further clarification please contact Secretary Treasurer Paul Faoro at the Division office—604-291-9119.
