CUPE 50 keeps Crystal Pool open for BC Day

CUPE 50 keeps Crystal Pool open for BC Day

VICTORIA – More than 650 community members were able to enjoy the Crystal Pool for free on BC Day thanks to CUPE Local 50.

The City of Victoria typically closes the public recreation centre on statutory holidays, which CUPE 50 president John Burrows says he finds unfortunate. He says that the union was glad to cover the cost to open Crystal Pool on BC Day so families and community members could enjoy the facility.

“The Crystal Pool is a long-standing and well-used community asset in Victoria. We had a great turnout for BC Day and Family Day, which tell us that people really value and enjoy the Crystal Pool,” said Burrows.

The union also sponsored a BBQ and gave away 500 free hot dogs and juice boxes.

Burrows says the local will definitely consider covering the costs of having the facility open on more statutory holidays in the future.

“With such a great response, it’s clear that the community appreciates having the chance to use the facility. CUPE 50 members, which includes the staff at Crystal Pool, are proud to provide great service to our community which we will continue to do.”
