Vancouver CUPE locals support literacy

VANCOUVER—CUPE 391 members were on hand at this year’s Word on the Street festival this past Sunday (Sept.30) to promote literacy and the important public services that library workers provide their communities. 

CUPE Locals 15, 389, 391, 1004 and CUPE Metro all sponsored the festival along with CUPE BC and CUPE National.

“Word on the Street is an event that we both sponsor and attend each year because promoting literacy within our community is so crucial,” says CUPE 391 president Alex Youngberg. “CUPE 391 members are proud of the services they provide their communities, however today many of those services are at risk. Members of the public really value library services so they are often surprised when we tell them about the possible decreases in service levels.”

The CUPE BC community events trailer was on hand and as part of its festival contribution, CUPE 391 sponsored author readings by Susan McNicoll, David Lester and Lynda Gray. The union’s booth also featured various printed materials including new CUPE BC library committee materials.

Word on the Street is an annual festival celebrating literacy and the written word. The festival is a showcase of local publishers, book sellers, and authors and features book sales, readings and performance art.
