CUPE connects with local elected officials from all over BC

WHISTLER—Last week at the annual Union of BC Municipalities Convention in Whistler, a contingent of CUPE leaders and staff used the opportunity to connect with local leaders from all over the province.

CUPE BC’s reception, which has become a highlight of the weeklong annual convention, was attended by more than 700 delegates and partners, and featured a keynote address from CUPE BC President Barry O’Neill.

O’Neill’s welcoming speech focused on how local government leadership can keep communities strong during tough economic times by encouraging citizens to think “Local First.” He also spoke of how important it is for CUPE elected leaders and staff to connect with local government officials on an ongoing basis.

“CUPE BC’s reception at UBCM is better attended each and every year,” said O’Neill. “And I think that’s testament to the work that CUPE members do every day in their communities. Local government officials know that CUPE members are just as committed as they are to building strong local economies that work for everyone in the community.”

O’Neill told UBCM delegates that CUPE BC will soon be introducing a major new initiative, the 10% Shift, which is intended to encourage British Columbians from all over the province to make a more conscious and deliberate effort to use individual purchasing power to improve local economies.
