CUPE BC to present “Bananas!*” at DOXA festival

VANCOUVER—CUPE BC, a screening partner at the annual DOXA Documentary Film Festival (May 7-16), will host the screening tomorrow afternoon of Swedish director Fredrik Gertten’s critically acclaimed film “Bananas!*”

Part of the DOXA festival’s justice forum series, “Bananas!*” recounts the story of Nicaraguan banana workers’ struggle against the corporate giant Dole Food. The suspenseful documentary follows personal injury lawyer Juan “Accidentes” Dominguez on his biggest case ever. On behalf of twelve Nicaraguan banana workers he is tackling Dole in a ground-breaking legal battle for their use of a banned pesticide that was known by the company to cause sterility. Can Dominguez beat the giant, or will the corporation get away with it? In “Bananas!*”, filmmaker Gertten sheds new light on the global politics of food.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Adriana Paz Ramirez, co-founder of the volunteers collective Justicia for Migrant Workers in BC, a collective that works with migrant farm workers who come through the federal Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program; and Kirsten Daub of Café Etico, a fair trade, organic coffee company owned by CoDevelopment Canada, whose worker-to-worker projects in Nicaragua, Cuba and Colombia are sponsored by CUPE BC.
