BURNABY—CUPE BC’s executive board voted on Thursday evening to endorse Ken Georgetti for a sixth term as president of the Canadian Labour Congress, along with Georgetti’s running mates on the “Work Together, Win Together” team.
“Ken Georgetti has been a great leader in the labour movement for more than 30 years, beginning with his days here in BC,” said Hancock. “He’s got the strength, the commitment and the compassion needed to lead our movement in the right direction. For the 85,000 members of CUPE in British Columbia, I know that Ken’s leadership on supporting progressive candidates in local elections has had an extremely positive impact. And on issues that matter most to working people and their families, Ken has the right approach, whether on improving the Canada Pension Plan, taking on the Harper Conservatives’ radical right-wing attacks on unions and union members, or initiating great campaigns like Together Fairness Works.”
“Ken Georgetti’s contribution to the labour movement in Canada is nearly unparalleled,” said Faoro. “When he was president of the BC Fed, membership increased dramatically, and the labour movement worked with the NDP government of the day to improve working conditions, workers’ rights and skills training and apprenticeships. He’s the right leader for the CLC as the next federal election looms. The possibility of electing the first-ever NDP federal government is greater with a united labour movement working together.”
The Canadian Labour Congress’s triannual convention takes place next week in Montreal. Elections will be held on Thursday. For more information on the “Work Together, Win Together” team, visit www.wintogether.ca.
