Front-line library workers to hold information picket at opening of Vernon branch

Front-line library workers to hold information picket at opening of Vernon branch

VERNON—CUPE library workers will hold an information picket Saturday morning at the new Vernon Okanagan Regional Library branch.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Vernon Library which is located at 2800-30th Avenue.

CUPE 1123 president Rose Jurkic says that the information picket will not disrupt the opening of the branch.

“We are celebrating the opening of the new library here in Vernon, our members work at this library and we know that this branch is important to the community,” said Jurkic. “All we are asking for is our employer to recognize that the work we do makes libraries like this one successful. Refusing to negotiate a fair collective agreement doesn’t send a message of respect to employees.”

CUPE 1123, which represents more than 150 front-line community library workers in the Okanagan, have been in a legal strike position since May 3.
