December 6 1989 – Marking 20 years

Day of remembrance and action to end violence against women

BURNABY-On December 6 we remember and mourn the 14 women who were murdered at the École Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989.

To help commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Montreal massacre and renew the call for change, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has developed a postcard campaign which officially launched on November 16. The campaign entitled 20 days 20 ways to end violence against women encourages activists to send one postcard a day to the Prime Minister for the 20 days leading up to December 6. Postage is free to the Prime Minister’s office.

A set of 20 different postcards highlights a variety of measures that governments could implement to increase the safety and security of women to help eliminate violence against women.

On this day, CUPE BC recommits to action to end violence against women. An end to violence against women can only come about with a commitment to advance women’s equality. Women in Canada and globally continue to experience wage discrimination, unequal access to training and education, a shortage of affordable housing, a shortage of quality public or non-profit child care, and cuts to women’s advocacy.

In B.C., activities will happen in communities throughout the province, including a WAVAW (Women Against Violence Against Women) rally in Vancouver on December 5.
