Postponement of AGM a ‘Pacific Double Cross’: CUPE BC

Postponement of AGM a ‘Pacific Double Cross’: CUPE BC

BURNABY— Tuesday’s announcement by Pacific Blue Cross that the company has cancelled its scheduled September 7 annual general meeting and is deferring the society’s next AGM “until normal service levels resume” is politically motivated and violates the democratic process of the non-profit society, CUPE BC President Paul Faoro said today.

“Pacific Blue Cross bylaws require that annual general meetings be held no more than fifteen months apart. For the board of directors to unilaterally cancel this AGM—and for PBC to claim that this move by the board is in support of management’s efforts—is a total abuse of the board’s privilege and a slap in the face to PBC members,” said Faoro.

“This is clearly an abuse of the trust that PBC members place in their board, and it’s transparently political. This is a desperate act by a board that knows it has to answer for its members’ pitiful handling of this dispute. So this really is a Pacific Double Cross.”

CUPE 1816 President Beth Miller says the union is reviewing its options and investigating the legal ramifications of the board’s decision.
