Community social services workers brave the cold to help the needy

Community social services workers brave the cold to help the needy

NANAIMO – Members of CUPE, HEU, and HSA served baked goods, hot chocolate and coffee, and distributed warm clothing to people in need as their community social services locals took a day of strike action out to the general public.

The event, held at Diana Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo drew several dozen members of the public who appeared to appreciate the alternate job action to picketing.

Several representatives from local media outlets attended as well, and members of all three unions shared their experiences as front line caring professionals and also addressed some of the ongoing  bargaining issues.

B.C.’s 15,000 community social services workers continue to seek a fair deal while waiting to return to the table.  They have been legally on strike since October 16.
