CUPE BC Fed Delegates Endorse Amber Hockin for President and Aaron Ekman for Secretary-Treasurer

VANCOUVER – CUPE delegates to the BC Federation of Labour convention today endorsed Amber Hockin for President and Aaron Ekman for Secretary-Treasurer of the Federation.

“I am honoured to receive the support of my union,” said Hockin who was first elected president of her CUPE Local representing workers in the airline division 30 years ago. “CUPE has always been on the front line of building a stronger labour movement, and I am so proud to stand as a CUPE candidate for President. And I look forward to working with CUPE and all affiliates to build a stronger, more progressive and more effective labour movement that is more relevant to all working people.

More than 300 CUPE delegates held their first caucus meeting to hear about the new vision for the BC labour movement presented by Hockin and Ekman.

“Momentum for our campaign is continuing to build,” said Ekman. “I’m humbled by CUPE’s strong support, along with that of many other private and public sector unions that represent workers in every corner of the province, and every sector of our economy.”

“CUPE looks forward to working with a strong united labour movement under the leadership of Amber Hockin and Aaron Ekman,” said Mark Hancock, President of CUPE BC. “CUPE members know how important solidarity is, and Amber Hockin is the best candidate to unite the affiliates and make the labour movement even stronger and more effective.”

Delegates will vote on Thursday morning at the Canada Place Convention Centre in Vancouver.
