Black History Month – Celebrating Lives, Fighting for Justice

Black History Month – Celebrating Lives, Fighting for Justice

BURNABY—February is Black History Month. This year, community events and programmes feature outstanding films, artistic and historical exhibits, as well as new strategies for fighting anti-black racism.

CUPE National’s web coverage of Black History Month features a checklist on fighting racism.

Here in B.C., the Vancouver International Film Festival will feature screenings of several films on black history, including the Vancouver premiere of the Academy Award-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro  (screening from Feb 24), which links the lives of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Medgar Evers through the eyes of writer James Baldwin and filmmaker Raoul Peck.

A complete list of Lower Mainland-based events can be found here.

In Victoria, the BC Black History Awareness Society has several events planned.
