CUPE BC celebrates the life of Local 1048 President, Sister Janet Bigelow

CUPE BC celebrates the life of Local 1048 President, Sister Janet Bigelow

Prince George residents and CUPE members across BC and Canada were deeply saddened to learn on August 10th of the loss of CUPE Local 1048 President, Sister Janet Bigelow.

A powerful representative of City of Prince George employees and a defender of quality public services, a strong voice on the North Central Labour Council, and an important community activist, Janet’s positive impact on her union and her community will be felt for many years to come.

Janet played a central role in organizing and mobilizing voters to elect a progressive majority city council in the last local government elections, where all CUPE and Labour endorsed candidates were elected. Her service on the CUPE BC executive board, as well as many committees at the provincial and national level made our union better, stronger, more inclusive and more democratic.

Our thoughts are with her family who she loved and who loved her. We know Janet and her family were very grateful for all the love and support they have received during her long battle with cancer.

The details of the celebration of Janet’s life are as follows:

Prayers: Friday, August 25th, Sacred Heart Cathedral, 887 Patricia Blvd., Prince George at 7:00 pm.

Memorial Service: Saturday, August 26th, Sacred Heart Cathedral at 10:30 am.

There will also be a Catholic mass in Janet’s name Sunday, August 27th, Sacred Heart Cathedral at 11:00 am.

At Janet’s request, please feel open to wearing bright colours and comfortable clothing to the service. One of Janet’s biggest passions in life was flowers so flowers are most welcome. Flowers can also be sent to 153 North Moffat Street, Prince George, BC V2M 3G4.
