SFU residence workers vote to join CUPE

BURNABY – Simon Fraser University (SFU) student residence workers voted in favour of joining CUPE Local 3338 last week in a vote administered by the BC Labour Relations Board (LRB).

This group of workers includes 55 employees who work throughout SFU’s residences as community advisors, area coordinators, programming assistants and orientation assistants.

“We are excited to welcome this new group of members to our growing local,” says CUPE 3338 President Fiona Brady Lenfesty. “Our next step will be to begin negotiations to help address issues including work-school life balance, safety and security issues, job security and fair compensation.”

CUPE Local 3338 represents approximately 1200 workers, mainly at SFU campuses, including lifeguards, clerical, support, library and technical workers, cleaning staff at Best Services Pros, support staff for CUPW’s Vancouver local, staff at the Simon Fraser Student Society, Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group and Graduate Student Society and now student employees at SFU’s residences.
