“Keep it Local, Keep it Public” event a success in Richmond
RICHMOND—Attendees at Tuesday’s “Keep it Local, Keep it Public” event were able to enjoy delicious municipal tap water provided by Richmond’s tap water stations.
Richmond’s two tap water stations, which debuted last year, provide clean, safe water from Richmond’s tap. Both stations are portable tap water units that connect to the city’s water distribution system through an available connection point. This allows residents to enjoy municipal water and promotes sustainability.
CUPE 394, the Council of Canadians and the Richmond Food Security Society joined together to host this informative evening. The well attended event featured a screening of the film “Water Makes Money” followed by presentations from Zoe Magnus, the Privatization Coordinator for CUPE in B.C. and Ava Waxman, Organizing Assistant for the Council Canadians in the B.C. and Yukon region. Richmond water worker and CUPE 394 member John Nixon was also on hand to answer questions about the innovative tap water stations.
Magnus spoke about the campaign to keep water public in Abbotsford while Waxman spoke about the Blue Communities Project.
“Richmond is a community that has already done a great deal of positive work around water. The purpose of this event was to give Richmond residents the tools and information they need to keep doing great work,” said Magnus. “Water is a precious resource, and even though Richmond may not be facing a P3 like Abbotsford, it is still important for communities to preserve and protect their resources.”
