BC Transit and CUPE 4500 reach labour agreement

CORPORATE – BC Transit and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 4500 (CUPE 4500) have ratified a new labour agreement under the Province of British Columbia’s Economic Stability Mandate.

The term of the agreement is five and one half years, to December 31, 2020. It covers 19 full-time employees based in Victoria covering three job classifications: Transit Supervisors, Lead Transit Supervisors and Transit Communications Coordinators.

CUPE 4951 ratifies new contract at College of New Caledonia

PRINCE GEORGE–CUPE Local 4951 ratified a collective agreement with the College of New Caledonia in a vote concluded on June 29.

“I’m pleased that members voted to ratify this agreement and will have access to professional development funds,” said CUPE 4951 President Lily Bachand. “This round of bargaining highlighted the excellent work done by our bargaining committee.”

White Rock airs private plans for garbage collection

WHITE ROCK – City Council’s soliciting for private solid waste collection has local CUPE municipal workers and residents concerned.  Among the options being touted by Council are moving the collection for single-family dwellings from the current public service to private for-profit collection.

CUPE 411 builds on community relationships at car show

Lots of kids and families visited CUPE 411’s new tent at the Chilliwack Classic Car Show.

CHILLIWACK – Despite the heat wave, CUPE 411 had lots of visitors at their tent for the
Chilliwack Classic Car Show on Sunday, June 28. 

This is the second year that the local, representing K-12 education support workers in Chilliwack, participated in the popular community event. CUPE 411 President Rod Isaac said that the local has been connecting with folks ‘slowly and surely.’

College sector completes bargaining

BURNABY – The ratification vote by CUPE Local 1858 (Vancouver Island University) in Nanaimo on Monday, June 29 marked the completion of bargaining for all CUPE college sector locals that are part of the CUPE Colleges Bargaining Council (CCBC). All agreements followed the provincial mandate of 5.5 per cent over five years.

CUPE college sector coordinator Ian McLean expressed concern that, by the end of this contract, wages for college support staff will have fallen below the cost of living for more than a decade.

Comox Valley municipal workers make the case for more protein at local food bank

COURTENAY – Local 556 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees delivered 70 cases of tinned wild salmon to the Comox Valley Food Bank today.

Unions and community groups have been working together to address the growing number of people in BC who must rely on food banks. Protein for People is a community partnership program designed to address those shortages.

Langford RCMP detachment support workers join CUPE 50

VICTORIA – Support workers at the City of Langford RCMP detachment decided to become members of CUPE Local 50 at a Labour Board vote on June 15.

“We warmly welcome these members into CUPE Local 50 and look forward to working together,” said CUPE 50 President John Burrows. Burrows noted that the RCMP support workers are a great fit with the local.

CUPE 50 served notice to bargain today and will commence bargaining a first agreement on behalf of the RCMP detachment support workers with the City of Langford.

CUPE 2081 reaches tentative agreement with Camosun College

VICTORIA – CUPE 2081, representing Camosun College support staff, reached a tentative agreement last week after two and a half weeks of bargaining.

“Our bargaining committee worked hard to reach an agreement that will benefit members,” said CUPE 2081 President Tony Nelson. “I’d like to thank them for their dedication and strong efforts.”

The agreement follows the provincial mandate and addresses some issues around the pharmaceutical formulary.

CUPE 873-03 members ratify first collective agreement with SN Transport

RICHMOND—CUPE 873-03 members have ratified their first collective agreement with SN Transport, a three-year deal that includes general wage increases for each year, improvements to hours of work and leave provisions, and other benefits that were not available to members before the deal was reached.

The ratification vote was held on Thursday, with a clear majority of members supporting the tentative agreement that was reached on June 11.
