CUPE 4163 reaches tentative agreement at UVic

VICTORIA— CUPE 4163 Components 1 and 2 reached a tentative agreement with the University of Victoria on February 10. The local began bargaining on November 13 and met for a total of 11 sessions.

CUPE 4163 President Greg Melnechuk thanked the bargaining team for all their efforts.

“I also want to acknowledge the respectful tone of this round of bargaining,” said Melnechuk. “While we weren’t able to resolve all of our needs, we worked together with the employer to find solutions and bring some much-needed improvements in different areas for our members.”

Further details of the agreement will not be available until after ratification by both parties, expected by the end of February.

CUPE 4163 Component 1 represents Teaching Assistants, Lab Instructors, Computer Lab assistants, and Academic Assistants. Component 2 represents Second Language Instructors in the English Language Centre and French language Programme, Cultural Assistants and Residence Life Workers.

Component 3 representing Continuing Instructors, Sessional Instructors, and Music Performance Instructors, ratified their collective agreement in September.

In total, CUPE 4163 represents approximately 1700 members who perform more than two-thirds of instruction at the University of Victoria.
