CUPE 1004 reaches mediated settlement with CSU

CUPE 1004 reaches mediated settlement with CSU

VANCOUVER – CUPE 1004, representing workers who provide support services to students at Capilano University, has reached a tentative agreement with the Capilano Students’ Union (CSU).

The settlement was reached through a mediator on Saturday, in time to avert a lockout by CSU that was due to start on Monday, August 24.

“We’re pleased that CSU came back to mediation and worked with us to reach an agreement,” said Sarah Silvester, a bargaining committee member and CUPE 1004 executive member. “Our members were very concerned that students would not receive the help they needed if the lockout went ahead.”

Details of the settlement will not be released until after ratification by CUPE members and the CSU board. A ratification vote is scheduled for Monday.

“The hard work and dedication of bargaining committee members Giselle Aiabens and Sarah Silvester is greatly appreciated by 1004 members at CSU – especially in the face of a lockout threat,” said CUPE 1004 President Andrew Ledger.

CUPE 1004 represents 14 members who provide Student Union services to Capilano University students. Almost two-thirds of these members are students themselves. Services they provide include locker rentals and support for back to school events, helping with CSU Health and Dental plan and U-Pass BC questions, as well as responding to students’ needs in general.

CUPE 1004 also includes 18 other bargaining units representing more than 3,500 members who work for the City of Vancouver, the PNE, the Portland Hotel Society and a number of smaller employers.
